Volvo refers to their Inboard Performance System (IPS) as Forward Thinking. When they decided to build a three engine 70' Spencer sportfish to introduce the new IPS 3 their stated intention was to rethink the entire boat. The boat would have roughly half the horsepower and half the fuel with minimal effect on performance thanks to the greater efficiency of IPS as well as an innovative yacht interior and layout.

Belkov Yacht was called in to work with Volvo Penta and the crew at Spencer Yachts to assist with the rethinking and design of the boat. Meeting the prescribed timeline and budget was critical for Volvo to illustrate the advantages of IPS. Belkov assisted with planning, project organization/management and fabricated and delivered the lightweight honeycomb cored, gloss finished, Teak interior.

So what makes this boat different from the previous inclined shaft versions? Well for instance:

  • Three IPS 3 drive systems are aft allowing for an addition of 160 sq. ft. of interior space.
  • The forward machinery room places house systems central to the areas they service, better distributes weight and frees up space in the engine room.
  • Hull vents for engine room air (Spencer trademarks) have redesigned airboxes to duct air aft of accommodations area to engineroom.
  • Required fuel is roughly half and is located below the accommodations area sole centered on the longitudinal center of gravity (LCG).
  • Variable weights (primarily tankage) are central to the longitudinal center of gravity (LCG) so static trim doesn't change between full load and lightship.
  • The below accommodations area extends 9' further aft into what would have been the engineroom allowing for a crew stateroom and a full beam master stateroom.
  • Hull windows introduce light and spacious feeling to stairway below, staterooms and hallway.
  • In place of forward salon cabinetwork a large window and 8-person U-shaped dinette adds view, light and spacious feeling to the salon, a 28' long salon in a 70' boat.
  • Ground tackle is concealed behind doors in the bow. Doors open, anchor roller extends and anchor drops by deploying the windlass. To weigh anchor the windlass again does all the work of hauling the anchor, retracting the roller and closing the bow doors.
  • Chilled water air conditioning system that is totally free from condensation, dripping water lines and odor, problems so often associated with chilled water systems.
  • Bridge detailed in black and gray upholstery, black Lonseal flooring, gloss clear coat carbon fiber and Teak trim, flat panel TV, wet bar, drink chiller drawers and comfortable seating has the feel of a luxury yacht, or slide open the aft door, lower the aft window at the push of a button and step back to the aft centerline helm and you are at the fully instrumented bridge of a no nonsense, straight ahead sportfishing boat.
  • Interior joinerwork was designed and built during hull construction, delivery started shortly after the hull was turned upright and scheduled as required to complete the boat.
